The mosaic is the figurative or geometric decoration of a surface with fragments (tesserae) of stone, marble, terracotta, enamel, mother of pearl or glass paste, cut into more or less regular shapes, generally quadrangular, and fixed on a preparation layer made in mortar or plaster.
